Commercial Loan Officer

General Summary – Primary Functions
The primary purpose of this position is to serve as the Credit Union’s outside commercial lending sales representative. This role requires spending approximately 75% of the time actively identifying, soliciting, developing, and servicing comprehensive banking relationships with members and potential members.
Under general supervision and in compliance with all legal requirements and established policies and procedures, the Commercial Loan Officer II provides a variety of commercial loans above $1 million and deposit services to the membership. Additional responsibilities include cross-selling credit union products and maintaining a working knowledge of all services and operations of the credit union.
1. Growing & Maximizing Member Relationships
- Responsible for an annual funded loan production of $16 million.
- Grow business development efforts for new and existing commercial loan requests.
- Focus on potential business members with the main objective to attract, retain, and maximize new business relationships.
- Grow and retain business member relationships through effective cross-selling of Credit Union products and services.
- Partner with department staff to facilitate commercial loan applications and new deposit account openings, ensuring a smooth and positive member experience.
- Consult with members requesting refinancing or renewals and modifications of current commercial loans.
- Unless informed otherwise, responsible for an annual site visit of each commercial loan with documentation via memos and pictures of site visits as required.
2. Analysis on Commercial Accounts
- Interpret financial information provided by commercial loan borrowers.
- Work collaboratively with commercial analysts to assess and evaluate commercial lending and deposit opportunities—ensuring sound lending practices, strong member relationships, and alignment with business needs, primarily in commercial and owner-occupied real estate.
- Responsible for understanding the current market conditions in the geographic markets served.
- Prepare for and present information at commercial loan committee meetings.
- Recommend approvals / denials / counteroffers on commercial loan requests to loan committees and/or Senior Management.
- Request the required documentation for analysis of commercial loans and deposit accounts from the borrower and coordinate the review of that documentation with A+FCU credit analysts and commercial loan administration staff.
- Responsible for collection activity on commercial loans as assigned.
3. Community Involvement & Miscellaneous
- Establish, manage, and sustain constructive and productive relationships with civic, charitable, community, and local/state organizations to facilitate an appropriate level of support and contribution by the Credit Union to the community it serves.
- Act as Credit Union representative at appropriate community events, working closely with Credit Union staff and preferred business partners, as necessary, to effectively promote the Credit Union.
- Complete annual regulation training as assigned.
- Schedule and conduct individual dialogues with direct manager monthly.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
- Bachelor’s degree in a business-related field preferred.
- Two years of commercial lending required.
- Five years of financial institution experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent ability to work with all levels professionally (internal team members, vendors, commercial members, etc.).
- Strong knowledge of laws and regulations governing commercial lending practices.
- Strong knowledge and experience in financial statement analysis and ability to make sound lending recommendations based on available information.
- Strong knowledge of state and federal laws pertaining to commercial loans.
- Ability to systematically gather, retrieve, and interpret data from multiple reporting sources.
- Willingness to assume responsibility and exhibit excellent problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to prioritize, organize time, and work independently.
- Ability to maintain composure, poise, and patience in dealing with members, non-members, and staff.
- Maintain a professional image and appearance.
- A significant level of trust and diplomacy is required, in addition to normal courtesy and tact. Work involves extensive personal contact with others and/or is usually of a personal or sensitive nature.
- Ability to travel to and from activities outside of the office.
Certifications / Registrations
This position requires registration as a Mortgage Loan Originator (MLO) with the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System (NMLS) and Registry on an annual basis, in addition to maintaining updates as needed. Initial registration is required immediately upon hire into this position.
Failure to register or maintain a current registry, or any criminal activity that would bar continued participation as an MLO, may result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.
